The passport format is set by EU regulation and a published series of European standards. This page states exactly which rules we engineer against, and is honest about what the delegated acts have not yet fixed.

PART 1 · THE REGULATION

ESPR: Regulation (EU) 2024/1781

The Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation establishes Digital Product Passports. Article 9 sets the passport mechanism, identifiers and data carrier; Annex III is the menu of passport content the sector delegated acts draw from.

STATUS: TEXTILE DELEGATED ACT NOT YET PUBLISHED

The exact content requirements and enforcement dates for textiles are set by a Delegated Act that is expected in the 2027 to 2028 window and is not yet published. We track it and keep passports current as the rules take shape.

PART 2 · THE PUBLISHED EN STANDARDS

The EN 18220 series, engineered against

CEN/CENELEC JTC 24 published the horizontal DPP standards in 2026. We hold the full texts and engineer against them clause by clause.

Data exchange protocols

Passport data is served over documented, versioned exchange interfaces; exports carry the full record including provenance.

EN 18219:2026

Unique identifiers

Every passport keys on a unique product identifier. GS1-issued GTINs are supported with check-digit validation; GTIN-less products receive a permanent platform-minted identity.

EN 18220:2026

Data carriers

QR carriers are generated to the standard’s geometry guidance, with print layouts for labels and hang tags and the physical size stamped into the vector output.

Data storage, archiving and persistence

First publication freezes a signed snapshot; corrections append rather than overwrite; withdrawal and retention states are explicit.

APIs

Passport lifecycle operations (create, publish, correct, withdraw, resolve) run through a documented API surface with role-scoped access.

System interoperability

Passports resolve from the standard identifier paths and export in machine-readable form, so other conformant systems can consume them.

PART 3 · THE VOLUNTARY PROGRAMME

Publishing before obligation

Nothing stops you publishing a passport today. A voluntary passport uses the same structure, record and carriers as the regulated kind; a product without a GS1-issued GTIN receives a permanent platform identity instead, and the page says plainly that it is published by choice. When the delegated act lands, the data you have already collected is the data it will ask for.
